Earth Day
Our Power, Our Planet
Welcome to our first poll including results from the RTP campus! Previously, our poll was collecting data from but ONE geographic region. Thankfully, we have been able to expand our reach to the EPA RTP campus, both diversifying our pool of respondents and upping our N. We can now include an exploration of geographic differences in our polling results where we find points of interest.
How decisive were these results, combined?
TL;DR: Hiking crushed Picnicking (59–13, 82%) — the strongest signal of the week by far. Volunteering was the closest thing to a coin flip: Trash Pickup edged Invasive Species Removal by just 2 vote(s), 37–35.
| question | N | Leader (votes) | Trailer (votes) | Leader share | Margin (votes) | Margin (points) | p vs 50/50 | Leader 95% CI | Votes to flip |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Animal Scoping | 73 | Snorkling (50) | Birding (23) | 68.5% | 27 | 37.0% | 0.00212 | [0.57, 0.79] | 14 |
| Enjoying Nature | 72 | Hike (59) | Picnic (13) | 81.9% | 46 | 63.9% | 0.00000 | [0.71, 0.90] | 24 |
| Swimming | 77 | Ocean (46) | Lake (31) | 59.7% | 15 | 19.5% | 0.11000 | [0.48, 0.71] | 8 |
| Volunteering | 72 | Trash Pickup (37) | Invasive Species Removal (35) | 51.4% | 2 | 2.8% | 0.90600 | [0.39, 0.63] | 2 |
Does HQ agree with RTP?
Now for the fun part: with two offices voting, we can finally ask whether HQ and RTP actually see things the same way, instead of just assuming it. For each question we run a two-proportion test comparing the two offices’ support for the overall winning option.
| question | Leader (overall) | HQ share | RTP share | Gap (pts) | p-value |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Animal Scoping | Snorkling | 71% (27/38) | 66% (23/35) | 5% | 0.812 |
| Enjoying Nature | Hike | 82% (32/39) | 82% (27/33) | 0% | 1.000 |
| Swimming | Ocean | 57% (25/44) | 64% (21/33) | 7% | 0.712 |
| Volunteering | Trash Pickup | 45% (17/38) | 59% (20/34) | 14% | 0.338 |
None of the four gaps clear statistical significance (all p > 0.2) — with samples this size we shouldn’t expect them to. But two results stand out:
- Enjoying Nature is where the offices agree almost perfectly: HQ went 82% for Hiking and RTP went 82% — a gap of well under a point.
- Volunteering is the sneaky one. The combined total above looked like a coin flip, but that’s actually two offices confidently disagreeing and canceling each other out: HQ leaned toward Invasive Species Removal while RTP leaned toward Trash Pickup, the widest office gap of the day. A “toss-up” in the combined numbers can quietly be hiding a real split underneath.
Since this is the first week with two offices, let’s define a running HQ–RTP Alignment Index: the correlation between HQ’s and RTP’s vote shares across every option this week. Right now it’s 0.9 — pretty well aligned, Volunteering’s split aside. We’ll track this number as more polls come in from both offices.
